Description
Papa Titioning is one of the most popular Number Fun characters. He’s a lumberjack who categorises his logs in units of 10 to mirror our Base 10 system. Check out Papa T’s songs on the Number Fun Portal!
90 Standard Cards – with a log image plus it’s value at the top and bottom.
8 Compound Cards – cards that show Papa T’s Log classification system.
4 Red Cards – Joker cards that show key multiples: 0.001s, 1s, 1000s & millions
10 Blue Cards – these show the full 10 of a value – they are equivalent to a Standard Card.
Ideas for Use:
1: Gattegno Grid – print each page but do not cut into individual cards. Instead, cut around the outside and piece together a big, pictorial Gattegno Grid (see Papa Titioning’s Log Gattegno Grid download in the Number Fun Shop). The 10 Blue Cards are not needed for this presentation.
2: Reasoning Challenges – e.g. children are given 16 cards which are all turned face up. Children are then challenged to use 4 cards to create: (1) smallest value (2) greatest value (3) a calculation (4) a relationship (e.g. similar ratios)
3: Tell Me a Story – children deal 5 cards – one for each day of the week. What’s the story behind the images? What sort of week has Papa T. had?
4: Trading Games – children each take a card and trade with others. At each trade they e.g. calculate the total and difference between their cards.
5: Alongside Base 10 equipment & Place Value Counters. Deal 4 cards and create the number represented on a Place Value Grid, calculating and exchanging as required.
